Cryptocurrency exchange Luno saw a major change in its executive team in December 2020, as its co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO), Timothy Stranex, departed to pursue personal projects. Founded nearly 10 years ago by Stranex, Carel van Wyk, Pieter Heyns and current CEO Marcus Swanepoel, Luno has grown to become a major player in the crypto space, boasting over 10 million customers in countries across the world.

Headquartered in London, Luno has expanded its operations to include offices in Singapore, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos and Sydney. The company is a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group (DCG), which also owns CoinDesk. Stranex’s role as CTO has been taken over by Simon Ince, who joined Luno just under two years ago as its Vice President of Engineering.

During his tenure, Stranex was instrumental in developing and launching several products, including the Luno Wallet, Luno Exchange and Luno Instant. He was also responsible for developing Luno’s API and made significant contributions to the company’s core cryptocurrency infrastructure.

In a statement, Stranex said, “I’m incredibly proud of the team at Luno and all that we’ve achieved over the past decade. It’s been an incredible journey and it’s been an honour to be part of the Luno family. I wish the team all the best for the future and I’m sure that Luno will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Speaking on the appointment of Ince, Swanepoel said, “We’re excited to have Simon join our executive team as CTO. He brings a wealth of experience to the role and has been a driving force behind some of Luno’s most successful products. I’m looking forward to seeing all that he can bring to the table.”

Ince has been a major contributor to Luno’s engineering team for the past two years, and has played a crucial role in the development of products such as the Luno Wallet, Luno Exchange and Luno Instant. He also leads the team responsible for Luno’s cryptocurrency infrastructure, and is passionate about providing the best user experience for customers.

With Ince taking over the reins as CTO, Luno looks forward to further expanding its services and products, and continuing to provide a secure and reliable platform for customers to access cryptocurrency services.
